Hi Rob,

To add to the above, especially if you are a novice, many times, you have a number of players behind you when you attempt to do a straight backhand. What can often happen is that the ball just hits one of the horses behind you and basically goes nowhere. Should you do a tailshot, you can prevent this by making the ball go left and behind, missing following players. This also gives your teammates a chance to turn quickly (after you shout "tail!") and take the ball on their offside.

Best,
Nacho

Hey Robert, just adding on to what Felix said: the tail shot is a form of the back shot or backhander -- the same way the neck shot is a form of the forehander -- it's just a matter of where you want the ball to go that determines which type of backhander you use. Some people consider it a totally different shot, some people consider it just a backhander that passes behind the horse's tail.

To answer the gist of your question though, it's all just matter of where you want the ball to go. A backhander can go straight back, to the left, or to the right. If the ball is on your right or offside, and you want to hit it to your left, then you'd use a tail shot to hook it behind the horse's rump.

A tail shot is basically taken from the tail area of the pony and can be offensive or defensive. A back hander usually is taken from the side in either situation, the difference being where the shot is actually taken from. Only my 10cents. I'm no professional!!
